Modern Alpine Architecture

Architectural photography at dizzying heights.

With the photo series Modern Alpine Architecture, I have made it my task to find man-made spaces that display a perfect interplay of function, form and structure. Architecture that is carefully integrated into the impressive backdrop of the Alps makes us marvel and develop an appreciation for our environment. The buildings defy the harsh conditions of the high mountains and give us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of the Alps while being protected. Each image of this project, which was laid out over several years, celebrates groundbreaking architecture surrounded by fragile nature.

MODERN ALPINE ARCHITECTURE:

Winery Bolzano

A block of art.

Designed by Tyrol’s masters of winery architecture dell’agnolo kelderer architecture office , the architectural masterpiece stands out in the South Tyrolean Alps. The iconic luminous cuboid and its special gravity grape distribution system are particularly striking. The outer facade of the cuboid replicates the identity of the vine leaf.

Kurtatsch Winery

Kurtatsch Winery

A winery with remarkable architecture.

In order to photograph the retail space’s new mountain-like dolomite facade in conjunction with the existing architecture and the landscape to which it is bound, I had to use a number of techniques to capture the mood and welcoming atmosphere of the winery and the relationship between the building and show its location. The challenging terrain and complex perspectives required my skills as a drone pilot for aerial photography. Photographing the winery, even during normal operating hours, required patience, logistics and sensitivity. Knowledge of lighting, visual hierarchy and color schemes were essential to create alluring images of the dark, moody basement.

Messner Mountain Museum Corones

An Architectural Wonder of the Alps.

Zaha Hadid’s Messner Mountain Museum is the perfect example of alpine architecture. It combines fascinating architecture with breathtaking height. Along with my breathing mask, I brought my camera equipment to 2,300 meters above sea level to photograph this architectural wonder. The aim of the project was to capture the magical mood of the project while hiding the growing tourism. Quite a challenge, but I think the results are impressive

Neue Schwarzensteinhütte

Architecture on top of the Alps.

The Neue Schwarzensteinhütte is a mountain hut designed for a planning competition of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. It looms over 3,000 meters at the top of the Alps, so this project was a real challenge for me.

Path of Perspectives

A new view of the Alps.

The Nordkette Innsbruck is a playground for mountaineers. Everywhere you turn there is a slope to ski, a rock to climb, or a spot to fly down. As one glides up through the mist on the cog railway from Innsbruck, an intriguing array of structures emerge from the surrounding area. These blend seamlessly into the environment, were made from local resources and are modeled on the shapes of the hillside. Snøhetta’s Path of Perspectives perfectly emulates its name. It’s really a path of perspectives.

Restaurant Oberholz

Comfort redefined.

The Oberholz restaurant is designed as a modern interpretation of the classic South Tyrolean mountain hut. Interiors center on a redesigned conventional “stube” that spills into three individual guest rooms — or “pockets.” This flowing organic form and the masterful carpentry work throughout the space create an intimate atmosphere where walkers and guests can feel wrapped in a calm, protective cloak. Each of the three side arms features a huge glass wall that allows for mountain views.

Timmelsjoch Crosspoint

Multifunctional on a new level.

Timmelsjoch Crosspoint is a building with many functions. It is part of an alpine toll station, gondola station, restaurant and mountain motorcycle museum. Architect Michael Brötz told me that all of Crosspoint’s features were both its greatest difficulty behind its design and its greatest strength.

Timmelsjoch Experience

On a museum tour over the Hochpass.

The Timmelsjoch Experience is a sculptural addition to my series on modern alpine architecture. It is a collection of six museum-like sculpture stations spanning the Timmelsjoch. The sculptures on the Timmelsjoch are iconic examples of alpine architecture. Its fascinating connection to the mountainous surroundings is second to none. Each structure appears to be part of the terrain it is on. If you are coming from Austria, you will reach the sculptures step by step, starting at the footbridge. Next you get to the Smuggler, Transit, Passport Museum, Telescope and finally the Garnet Sculpture.
