‘Stadt die Bewegt’ (City in Motion) is a time-lapse video that aims to showcase Leipzig from a different perspective. Over the past nine years, Leipzig has been the focal point of many of my productions, both in independent projects and commissioned works. With each new project, I find it challenging to see such a familiar place with fresh eyes.
The initial spark for this work came from Andrew Geraci's masterful opening sequence of the Netflix original series “House of Cards.” I was drawn to the dark tones and the captivating arrangement of shots. So, I started planning a shot list off the beaten path, away from Leipzig's well-known motifs. It took three weeks to plan and scout the 50 shooting locations. My time as a freelance photojournalist for a local newspaper came in handy here. Since 2010, I have taken hundreds of cityscapes and can draw on an extensive database of motifs.
Equipped with a motion control system from Edelkrone and a Canon 5D Mk III, I spent most of June and August 2018 shooting over 8,000 images in Leipzig, mostly from early morning until late at night. The entire film production was geared towards creating a video with very high image quality and a high dynamic range, even under difficult conditions. I processed the recorded images in several steps, converted them into film sequences, and adjusted them to each other.
Seeing the resulting video is a great pleasure for me and a motivator to find new ways to show the familiar in a new light for future projects.
